Mingus rout sets up showdown

Coconino High school made Mingus Union High School work for its points in a 41-8 Senior Night win for MUHS. Marauders senior Levi Collins, No. 34, managed to break free for a touchdown on a 34-yard run, although the score was nullified by a penalty against the Marauders.

Mingus Union High School got the football finale it wanted Friday, Oct. 24.

Already up 14-0 at halftime, the Marauders [5-4 overall, 4-1 section] hung another 20 points on Coconino High School in the third quarter en route to a 41-13 win in the final home game for 12 seniors — including running backs Levi Collins and Orlando Machado, who each ran for more than 100 yards around the edges of the Panthers’ defense.

“It’s real bittersweet, but it had to end sometime,” Collins said. “I’m just glad we went out with a bang.”

All told, MUHS rolled up 577 rushing yards on the Panthers, much of those around the edges of their offensive line and down the sidelines, setting up a Halloween showdown at Prescott High School.
