City eyes future road improvements

The city of Cottonwood is taking inventory of streets it will improve in the future. One of those streets is the portion of Sixth that lies between Mingus Avenue and State Route 89A, where the Cottonwood Recreation Center, Cottonwood Public Library and public safety buildings all sit.

The city of Cottonwood is looking toward the future in anticipation of road and street improvement projects.

The city participates in a transportation improvement program administered through the Northern Arizona Council of Governments, an agency that works closely with municipalities in the region.

The council distributes federal funds for street improvements; the next funding window for Cottonwood won’t be until 2022 and 2023.

While that’s a bit into the future, the city is looking at possible projects in order to prepare for applying for the funds.

“The amount of … funding available to the city for each fiscal year is $369,300. One project could be funded each year for a total of two projects,” reported Cindy Smith, an engineer with the city’s development services department. “An alternative is to fund one project using two years of funding for a total of $738,600.”
