Bramblett and Goettl keys to cross-country postseason hopes

Published:

The Mingus Union High School cross-country teams will go as far this fall as senior Jordan Bramblett and junior Megan Goettl take them.

That much was established after college testing prevented Bramblett — the third-fastest boys runner in Division III who is six seconds away from breaking the MUHS 5K record — and other varsity upperclassmen from placing Saturday, Oct. 11, at the Bud Davis Meet in Tuba City.

In his 18 years as Marauders head coach, Jim Bostwick cannot remember that ever happening before.

“It is what it is,” said Bostwick after he teamed his two available seniors with three sophomores to manage fifth place out of 10 teams in the boys junior varsity heat. “Very unusual day to say the least for the boys as a result of injuries, SAT testing, Fall Break vacations [and] homecoming leadership responsibilities.”

In what Bostwick added was “almost a preview of state championships” for many of the best teams in the Marauders’ Division III as well as Division IV, Goettl led the girls varsity, “as she has done all year,” to a third-place finish Oct. 11 behind Page and Ganado high schools.
