Teams post State times at Brophy

Published:

Junior Sean Williams qualified for State with personal records in the 50- and 100-yard freestyle to lead the Mingus Union High School boys swimming team to 16th place out of 33 teams Saturday, Oct. 4, at the Brophy and Xavier College Prep Invitational.

“It was a fantastic meet,” Marauders head coach Gretchen Wesbrock said. “All Mingus boys had personal records in numerous events.”

Juniors Justis Byrd and Caleb Furey swam personal best times in the 100-yard breaststroke and freshman Gunner Tillemans swam a PR of 2:01.51 in the 200-yard freestyle to put themselves into consideration for next month’s Division II state tournament.

By one-tenth of a second, senior Leah Mount bested her previous PR in the 50-yard freestyle to also provisionally qualify for State for the Marauders girls. She would garner State consideration with a PR of 2:33.73 in the 200-yard individual medley as well.

The boys 200-yard freestyle and medley relay teams of Byrd, Furey, Tillemans and Williams swam their events eight seconds under the qualifying time for State to merit postseason consideration. Mount, senior McKenna Langley, junior Kim Rogers and freshman Emily Grasso had a qualifying time for State of 1:55.75 with the girls 200-yard freestyle team.
