Cowboys lose fifth straight in home shutout to Volunteers

Published:

Camp Verde High School was limited to 215 yards of total offense as 10th-ranked Lee Williams High School shut out the Cowboys, 27-0.

“From the first couple series, they just kind of outmatched us, physically,” Cowboys head coach Steve Darby said. “Our kids gave everything they had the whole game. They’re a good team.”

The Cowboys [1-5] dropped to 0-3 in Division V, Section VII with the usual suspects on offense unusually silent, as senior quarterback Bodie Holowell mustered just 92 yards passing — 37 of those to junior slotback Dakota Brueland — on 9 out of 22 completions.

“Some of our screens and our quick passes worked well, and that’s where we had the little success we did have,” Darby said. “Other than that, they just dominated us.”

Holowell and Brueland are second in the section with 884 yards passing and 416 yards receiving, respectively.

“Every game’s different,” Darby said. “This game, we were forced to do that, but you can’t just live off screens. They’re a part of our offense, but we’ve got to be able to do other things. We weren’t doing that.”

Of the Cowboys’ 123 yards rushing, 30 of those came from a fourth-quarter reverse to senior Jace Terry. Senior Jordan Reay had just 70 of the rest but remained third in the section with 384 yards rushing.
