Cowboys take ‘step back’, lose third straight

Published:

From the second play Friday, Sept. 26, when Sedona Red Rock High School senior Zeke Saxman forced a fumble and ran it in for a touchdown, it was a downhill night for Camp Verde High School.

Junior Dakota Brueland’s third-quarter touchdown reception avoided a complete Cowboys shutout, as rival SRRHS rolled in a 35-6 home win.

“We didn’t give up,” head coach Steve Darby said. “We just didn’t play very well, and Sedona played very well.”

Senior quarterback Bodie Holowell’s 9-yard toss was part of a 135-yard passing night in an otherwise “very frustrating” loss, Darby said.

“It was a hard game,” he said. “We kind of took a step back. Concepts we have reinforced in practice, we didn’t execute.”

The Cowboys’ primary back, senior Jordan Reay, had nine carries for only 41 yards as CVHS [1-4] lost its third straight game.

“We just weren’t together as a team,” said freshman Kevin Oothoudt, one of three first-year players to see significant minutes against the Scorpions as he filled in at linebacker for Holowell. “We’ve played better schools. It’s conditioning, really.”
