After a bold start to homecoming, an injury to its starting quarterback was too much for the Camp Verde High School football team to overcome Friday, Sept. 19, against Williams High School.
“It’s tough: Two weeks in a row, we come up short in very close games,” head coach Steve Darby said. “I’m very proud of my kids. They gave everything they had. They played with heart.”
A back injury in the second quarter sidelined senior quarterback Bodie Holowell until he attempted a heavily-taped comeback, but the injury affected his accuracy, and a pass intended for senior Dylan Dacuycuy fell short and was intercepted in the end zone by the Vikings, sealing a 27-18 Cowboys loss.
“Physically, I’m pretty beat up,” an emotional Holowell said after the loss. “I’ve had this back problem for a year now. Adrenalin takes over the pain now and then, but I just couldn’t stand it; it hurt really bad.”
With Holowell unable to run and “kind of useless” on defense, he added, he could not even watch from the sidelines as the Cowboys lost their lead in the second quarter. He was in the locker room, getting taped up by the team trainer.
