The Friday night fever of high school football came to its highest pitch on a Saturday, Sept. 13, with Camp Verde High School’s game against Scottsdale Preparatory Academy in Gilbert.

Although, officially, the final score was Spartans 40, Cowboys 35, head coach Steve Darby hasn’t yet accepted that result.

“They did not score in the second or fourth quarter,” he said. “They couldn’t run against us. Most of their points just came off of passes.”

Senior Bodie Holowell’s passes in the final two plays of the game could not find a Cowboys receiver in the end zone, however, and so could not cap a 15-point fourth quarter comeback.

“We had a chance,” Darby said. “We drove it all the way down from our 20 to their 10-yard line. We had two guys in the end zone look like they got knocked down early.”
