Boys soccer seeks third title in three decades

Published:

The shades of state titles past suggest that the Camp Verde High School boys soccer team is poised to join their ranks this fall.

Although Show Low High School avenged a 2-1 loss Oct. 4 to the Cowboys, knocking them out — and shutting them out — at home in the first round of the playoffs, the banners of the state boys soccer championships from 1994 and 2004 speak louder than ever in 2014.

“That’s history,” head boys coach Dave Miller said prior to a scrimmage Saturday, Aug. 30, at Payson High School. “You’re only as good as your last game, or your last season.”

Nobody knows that better than Miller, who was involved in both of those titles — as junior varsity coach his first season at CVHS 20 years ago and as head coach of the 2004 champs.

“The one state championship that I won, it was a quality, solid team,” he said. “But it was not my most talented team. The ball bounced our way.”

Following their season opener Wednesday, Sept. 3, at Phoenix Country Day School, the Cowboys will travel to Chino Valley High School on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 5 and 6, to play the defending state champion as well as the runner-up, Blue Ridge High School, as part of four games in the five-team Chino Cup.
