Tournaments give Marauders hoops a boost

Published:

On Saturday, Aug. 30, Dave Beery wants to settle which three-on-three basketball team is the best in the Verde Valley.

The Mingus Union High School head basketball coach has seen nearly 50 high school and adult boys and girls basketball players from around Cottonwood agree to suit up and play at least four tournament games in one day that he hopes will raise at least $1,000 for the Marauders hoops program.

“We have another five, six teams say they’re going to play,” he said. “Our goal is to have 25 teams.”
With a pre-paid $40 registration fee, plus signed waivers from any player under 18 years old, any team of three or four players who are at least in the sixth grade can play to 20 points in the main MUHS gymnasium beginning at 9 a.m. for middle school, high school or adult bragging rights.

“In this gym, we can have four games at a time,” he said. “We can accommodate up to 48 teams which, if it worked out that way, would be awesome.”
