Guillen and Navarro just ‘two of the boys’ at Wars

Published:

Camp Verde Elementary School first-grader Mayra Guillen and third-grader Shane Navarro are two of the youngest new wrestlers to finish in first in their weight classes at Weekend Wars this summer.

They’re also girls. Both Guillen, 6, and Navarro, 8, have finished first at 40 pounds twice this summer at Weekend Wars.

“It’s about time,” said Mario Chagolla Sr., Weekend Wars director and Camp Verde High School assistant wrestling coach to Bob Weir and Tracy Tudor. “Coach Weir, Coach Tudor and myself, we’ve been doing it for years. This has become a stall of thoroughbreds.”

Guillen’s mother, Chagolla said, had Guillen follow her three brothers — including 116-pound Daniel, a Camp Verde Middle School seventh-grader — into Weekend Wars because she wanted her daughter to start getting “more confidence, more self-esteem,” Chagolla said. “And the victories are bringing that along.”
