High school friends keep outdoor pool safe

Published:

On a warm and sunny summer day last week, the Cottonwood Rec Center’s outdoor public pool was crowded with people trying to get a bit of relief from the heat.

Should anything go wrong, two Mingus High School juniors are on the scene to save the day.

Josie Capp has been working at the pool as a lifeguard for a little over a month.

She got the job after her friend, Kim Rogers, told her it was a good gig.

Rogers is currently in her second year as a lifeguard at the pool.

Rogers herself took the job after hearing about it from another friend and she’s done her part to keep the cycle continuing.

The training takes about two weekends of work to qualify as a lifeguard, Rogers said, and she’s actually had to use that training to help someone who ended up in distress in the pool.

“They couldn’t touch the bottom,” Rogers said.
