Bulldogs stay in fight for league crown

Published:

Senior pitcher Jordan Lewis scattered seven runs over six innings and added his own three-run home run in the sixth as South Verde High School beat Bella Vista College Prep of Scottsdale, 18-7, April 16 at Middle Verde Heritage Park.

Lewis’ homer was part of a seven-run sixth inning to put the game away for the Bulldogs. Junior Dakota Baxter added the other four runs in the coed, slow-pitch softball game on a grand slam.
“By the bottom of the fifth, we were [up] 8-4, but we came back from a 4-3 deficit in the fourth inning,” said South Verde athletic director and team scorekeeper Laurie Kaaekuahiwi. “After that, they had a hard time catching up.”

The Bulldogs collected their fifth win of the spring with four games left on their schedule before they compete with rival Oak Creek School at the Northern Arizona Athletic Association tournament beginning Wednesday, May 7, at Riverfront Park in Cottonwood. All games are played to six innings or one hour and 15 minutes — whichever comes first — and the Bulldogs are looking to shorten things up if they can.
