Boys tennis heads to State after downing Bears

Published:

Mingus Union High School’s tennis teams closed out their regular seasons by splitting victory with loss against Bradshaw Mountain High School.

The boys team rebounded from a 5-4 loss Thursday, April 17, at Flagstaff High School to hand No. 5 Bradshaw Mountain High School its first sectional loss, 6-3, Tuesday, April 22, to close the regular season at home. The girls lost their final true road contest at the Bears, 8-1.

“I’m just happy for the kids, they did pass their test today,” head boys tennis coach Tarrin Walz said. “If we had lost, we would have been going nowhere.”

With the win, the Marauders finish with nine wins against four losses as a team and will travel to the Division III state tournament beginning at 3 p.m. Tuesday, April 29, as about a No. 15 road seed.

“Weird things happen, so until we’re notified we have a seed, I’m not going to make any predictions,” Walz said. “My prediction is that we’re going, but I don’t know that for sure. We could be anywhere from [No.] 16 to as high as 10.”
