War history comes alive at fort

The Gatling Battery Gun fires rounds from multiple barrels at the History of the Soldier event at Fort Verde State Historic Park in Camp Verde on Saturday, April 12. Developed by Richard Gatling in 1862, the Civil War-era weapon was fed by a magazine and crank operated, resulting in a rapid rate of fire for the era.

The Confederacy and the Union joined forces for a short time this weekend at Fort Verde State Historic Park for the History of the Soldier on Saturday and Sunday, April 12 and 13. A few British redcoats were around to help as well.

For a decade, re-enactors and history buffs have come together at the Fort each spring to celebrate the History of the Soldier, an event that shows visitors a little piece of living history.

The fort was active during the Indian Wars period of the late 19th century, and visitors will got to see examples of life in the armed forces during this time in history.
