Cowboys baseball team measures progress in rivalry games

Published:

Although there are still nine games left on the schedule, the Camp Verde High School baseball team has marked Friday, April 11, on its calendar.

That is when it travels to Sedona Red Rock High School for their second game against the Scorpions, who dealt the Cowboys baseball team [4-11-1] a 8-1 home loss March 18.

Cowboys head baseball coach Will Davis does not hide the fact that a win at SRRHS would make his team’s season.

“This is the highlight of our year if we beat Sedona,” he said. “It would be great to get a win at their place like they got at ours, definitely.”

The Cowboys are looking to bounce back from a 8-4 loss April 2 at Horizon Honors High School with a rivalry road win over the Scorpions and senior pitcher Carlos Rodriguez.

“It’ll be tough to score runs,” Davis said. “They’ve got a lot of games this week and a tough pitcher in Rodriguez, so I hope we don’t see him.

“Rodriguez just works the corners. Horizon was the same way. If they have a kid who throws hard, we’ll do well: He is a lot simpler to hit.”

“Would we like to win our rivalry game? Yes, and we’ll try our hardest to do so. It will probably come down to hitting the ball better than we did the first game and not making many errors defensively.”
