Cowboys softball seeks sectional solution for slide

Published:

After losing only once in its first seven games, Camp Verde High School’s softball team is looking to get back home after some bumps on the road last week.

The Cowboys will have a home date Tuesday, March 25, against Sequoia Charter before taking on Williams High School in their only scheduled doubleheader of the season Saturday, March 29. The Cowboys fell to 9-5 after two losses to Winslow High School along with defeats in the last two games Saturday, March 22, at the eighth annual Gracie Lee Haught Softball Classic in Payson.

“At the tournament, they played very well,” said Cowboys assistant coach Toni Harris. “Just minor things we need to work on, but overall they played very well.”

The Cowboys still have the best overall mark in Section IV of Division III after they used a four-run fifth inning to run-rule Sedona Red Rock High School in the section opener for both schools, 12-2, on Tuesday, March 18.

However, 8-3 Winslow High School would dog the Cowboys twice after that, run-ruling CVHS in four innings on their home field Wednesday, March 19, 10-0, then taking down the Cowboys 8-5 two days later in their second game of the Payson tournament in spite of sophomore Taya Smith’s two-for-two day at the plate.

Junior Danya Weir also went two-for-two and freshman Kayla Hackett added a two-for-three performance in the first loss to Winslow, which swept through the six-game, two-day tournament undefeated.
