Cottonwood Lobos head toward league tournament

Published:

After being outrun and outscored by Big Park Community School in preseason tournament losses, Cottonwood Middle School head girls basketball coach Carol Karber knew she’d have to give her Quad City League opponents a taste of that medicine.

“I expect a good fast game,” she said, and in all but one of the Lobos’ nine league games, her eighth grade “A” team has met those expectations — pushing the ball hard, which scores in the 20s and 30s have reflected.

That roll continued Tuesday, Feb. 25, with a 31-8 home dismantling of Glassford Hill Middle School, in which guard Ashley Razo led all scorers with 13 points.

The win gave the Lobos an 8-1 record and a tie atop the league standings with Granite Mountain Middle School going into their final regular season game Thursday, Feb. 27, against Mile High Middle School at CMS. The Lobos and the Grizzlies are fighting for the top seed in the Quad City League Tournament, to be played Saturday, March 1, at Bradshaw Mountain Middle School.

“Mile High’s pretty good, but Granite Mountain’s not going to lose again,” Cottonwood Middle School Athletic Director Bill Sanderlin said. “At least, not until they play us.”
