Wrestlers wait while skin infection delays state meet

Published:

Camp Verde High School principal and head wrestling coach Bob Weir had his team ready and waiting to travel to Phoenix for its Section II tournament at Bourgade High School on Friday, Feb. 7.

Then, right before he was about to board the team bus, the call came: Cancelled.

“We had our busses all gassed up and ready to go, then we find out all sectionals were cancelled,” Weir said Monday morning, Feb. 10. “So we don’t know which of our kids are qualified for state, if sectionals are going to be re-played, anything.”

The Arizona Interscholastic Association issued a release Feb. 7 on its website stating that “a number of wrestlers had contracted a skin infection” and, due to the large number of wrestlers with the infection, all sectional wrestling tournaments “as a precautionary measure” were being postponed until further notice, the release stated.
