CVHS girls ride huge rivalry win to postseason

Published:

Junior Mariah Daniels had 18 points and 13 rebounds, while junior Rayana Chatter added nine rebounds and dished 12 assists for Camp Verde High School’s third straight girls basketball win, a
61-39 home victory Saturday, Feb. 1, over Sedona Red Rock High School.

Following two more home games this week — Tuesday, Feb. 4, against Scottsdale Christian and Thursday, Feb. 6, against Horizon Honors — the Cowboys [18-8] will prepare for a postseason in which they will be one of the contenders for a Section III title and a home seed in the opening round of the Division III state tournament.

“Obviously, Mariah Daniels has become the cornerstone of our offense,” Showers said. “Our defense, when aggressive, has been the jump start for our offense.”
Sophomore Gabby Ontiveros fired that defense against the Scorpions, getting three steals to build on her team-leading 11-point performance in a 55-21 home domination of Northland Preparatory Academy on Friday, Jan. 31.

“We have been more consistent offensively and that will have to continue in the playoffs for us to be successful,” Showers said.
