Mingus rides tourney success to 10-5 mark

Published:

For most of Mingus Union High School’s pre-sectional boys basketball competition, it was truly either feast or famine — blowout wins or blowout losses.

Fortunately, in 10 out of the Marauders’ 15 games in the 2013 portion of their current boys basketball season — eight of those coming in their two invitational tournaments — the table was set for a Mingus feast.

The MUHS boys basketball team rode good passing and better defense to high-scoring victories and second-place finishes at both Wickenburg High School’s Cage Classic and the Holiday Hoops Tournament at Phoenix Christian Prep.

The next step is winning one of those tournaments. The Marauders were on the verge against Tempe Prep, holding a five-point lead with just over four minutes to play Thursday, Dec. 26, in the Holiday Hoops championship game — a rematch of their 60-55 loss to the Knights in the tournament’s opening game.

The Marauders had established the lead with a transition-heavy, assist-rich offense, a hallmark of most of their 10 victories this season.
