Senior goalkeeper Ady Ruiz had 11 saves for the Camp Verde girls soccer team in its game against the River Valley Dust Devils, but as hard as she tried, she couldn’t keep up with the number of shots headed her way.
Ruiz and her Camp Verde teammates found out there is a good reason why the Dust Devils are currently ranked third in the state — they are tenacious in the way they attack the goal.
The Cowboys girls [3-4-1] lost 3-1 to the Dust Devils 5-2-1] on Thursday, Oct. 10, at Sam Hammerstrom Field in Camp Verde and dropped to No. 10 in the latest AIA seedings. The top eight teams make the state tournament.
But although Ruiz stopped more than her fair share of goals, the Cowboys’ senior said she never tries to do more than she can do.
“I just try to get what I can get to and not force myself or push it over the limit,” Ruiz said. “So I just focused on the ones I wanted to grab.”
As one of the leaders of the team, Ruiz gets vocal with her teammates during games, but she said that is because she has a unique perspective on the field.
“It’s just to keep them up, because I can see the whole field,” she said. “So I try to keep them spread out, just focusing on their passes, and if I see that it’s going to be an over ball, I just try to make sure that they know it’s going to come over.”
