Football gets first win in 33-6 rout of North

Published:

Mingus senior tailback Dakota Hanks rushed for 141 yards and two touchdowns, and senior quarterback Micah Nevarez threw for one touchdown and ran for another as the Marauders [1-3] got their first victory of the season, a 33-6 blowout of the North High School Mustangs on Friday, Sept. 20, in Phoenix.

The two teams played to a scoreless tie in the first quarter, but Hanks took off on an 81-yard scamper for a touchdown early in the second quarter to give the Marauders a 6-0 lead after the extra point attempt failed.

Nevarez then hit senior Jesse Rios, who had 86 yards on three receptions in the game, on a 40-yard touchdown pass giving the Marauders a 12-0 lead after the two-point conversion failed.

North scored its only touchdown of the game late in the first half on a 36-yard pass from senior quarterback Frank Gomez to senior wide receiver Johnny Cortez. The extra point attempt was no good, giving the Marauders a 12-6 lead at halftime.

Mingus continued its offensive onslaught in the third quarter as senior Anthony Broyles scored a touchdown on a 4-yard run, and Hanks scored his second touchdown on a 3-yard run. Both extra points by senior kicker Jahir Jacobo were good, giving the Marauders a 26-6 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
