With a senior-laden lineup and a brand-new coach with fresh ideas, the Mingus Marauders volleyball team seemed to be set up for a successful season.

But a rough early-season schedule has led to a slow start with a pair of 3-0 losses in the first week of the season to Prescott on Sept., 3 and Sedona on Thursday, Sept. 5.

The good news is that the Marauders have a short break before their next game at Payson on Tuesday, Sept. 17, to work out some of the kinks.

The other good news is that they may have already worked out some of those kinks in the third set of their match to Sedona, a set in which they gave the defending state champs all they could handle in a 26-24 loss that could have gone either way.

Both teams were in early-season form during the match, committing far too many unforced errors for their coaches’ comfort.

But the Marauders dug themselves a hole they couldn’t climb out of with losses in the first two sets to Sedona 25-19 and 25-21.
