Mingus Union girls win state championship again

Published:

Mingus Union track and field athletes gave some of their best performances of the season, setting personal records in almost every event at the 2013 Boys and Girls Track and Field Division III State Championships on Saturday, May 11, at Mesa Community College.

Girls

The girls’ team took the top spot once again as their 89 points made them state champions for the second year in a row.

Allison Whitworth, a sophomore at Mingus Union High School, launches herself over the pole vault bar during the Sedona Invitational in April at Sedona Red Rock High School. Whitworth didn’t compete in the pole vault event at the state championships but cleared her personal best and placed second in the high jump with a jump of 5 feet, 2 inches.“The girls had outstanding performances in all three types of events, running, throwing and jumping,” MUHS track and field coach Yancey DeVore said. “It’s amazing to be champions back-to-back. There were a lot of PRs and the girls stepped up to get points that really helped us win.”

Perhaps the most exciting moment was when freshman Megan Goettl won the 1,600-meter run in 5 minutes, 8.51 seconds, beating Sedona Red Rock’s star distance runner senior Mykala Seresun. Goettl also placed fifth in the 800 with a time of 2:22.49.
