The Mingus Union High School softball team sailed through Window Rock, but was bitten by the Winslow Bulldogs in the quarterfinals of the Division III state softball tournament.
The Marauders were seeded No. 6 going into the tournament and were touted as a top contender for the title.
After a first round bye, they did what they’ve done seven times this season: shut out their opponent. They eased past the No. 11 seeded Window Rock Fighting Scouts, 15-0, the largest margin of victory in the playoffs, in a late game on Friday, May 3, at the Rose Mofford Sports Complex in Phoenix. Senior pitcher Angelina Saucedo was two outs away from pitching her fourth no-hitter of the season, but after a Fighting Scouts was able connect with the ball for a single and Saucedo had to settle for her fourth one-hitter.
“That was key in that game’s success,” Marauders Head Coach Jim Brown said. “And we hit well … really well. Everyone [in the lineup] had a hit, and the girls played good defense behind Angelina.”
The Marauders had to figure out Window Rock’s pitcher, but once they did in the second inning, all bets were off.
