Honor your deceased relatives and friends in art this year.
The annual celebration of Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, returns to Tlaquepaque for its third incarnation, and this year will add an art installation with some help from Sedona residents and out-of-town visitors.
The Marigold Mural Project opens to the public to paint on Tuesday, Oct. 30. During business hours Oct. 30, Wednesday, Oct. 31, and Thursday, Nov. 1, attendees are invited to check in at a booth on Calle Independencia. get some paint, brushes and guidance and add their remembrance to a 26-foot wide by 6-foot tall wooden canvas on which the muralist Lovejoy has created a decorative, marigold garland border.
“We hope lots of people will join in and express themselves, and think about their lives and remember those that have made a significant impact on us,” said Wendy Lippman, resident partner and general manager of Tlaquepaque.
Artistic talent is not a prerequisite to participation. Anyone who would like to remember someone who has passed on is invited.
“It’s not a contest, and you don’t need to be artistic. It’s a way to create something wonderful and lasting as a community. It’s also an opportunity for all of us to think about our life and what is our purpose,” said Lippman, who initiated the project.
