Two suicide notes were found near the bodies of a woman and her adult son Oct. 9 on the side State Route 89A north of Sedona.
Coconino County Sheriff’s Office Spokesman Gerry Blair identified the deceased as 79-year-old Darline Lee Farney and 58-year-old John Francis Farney. Both are believed to be from the Tucson area.
Their bodies were discovered propped against a log between the shoulder of State Route 89A and a right-of-way fence, according to the Coconino County Sheriff’s Office. A man and woman found the bodies just north of the Oak Creek Vista overlook the morning of Oct. 9.
The two passersby reported the discovery to a U.S. Forest Service employee at the overlook, who called the sheriff’s office.
An Arizona Department of Public Safety officer later confirmed the two were dead at the scene with apparent gunshot wounds to the head. A vehicle belonging to one of them was found nearby.
Law enforcement reportedly found two suicide notes in close proximity to the two bodies written by each of the individuals, according to a press release. A handgun was also found in the lap of John Farney.
