The rivalry between Sedona and Verde Valley police officers and firefighters is heating up once more, but it’s all for charity.
The annual Police vs. Firefighter Charity Basketball Game is Saturday, Oct. 20, at Mingus Union High School in Cottonwood starting at 2 p.m. The Sedona Verde Valley Firefighter Charities is hosting the event for its fourth year.
The police won the game in 2010 for the first time in a number of years, but the firefighters reclaimed the title last year when they grasped the victory in the final quarter.
“The police have assured me that this year will be no different from the last, other than the outcome in the end,” said Jordan Baker, president of the SVVFC.
“The game is very competitive, to say the least,” said Sean Chartier, treasurer of SVVFC. “It’s all for charity, but the friendly relationship we have with the police is a great chance for us to compete and see who can win the trophy and have bragging rights for the year.”
The admission for the game is $6 for adults and $3 for children. All of the proceeds from this event will be used by SVVFC to assist organizations throughout the Verde Valley and surrounding areas. These include local youth sports organizations throughout Sedona, the Verde Valley and Camp Verde, adult community centers, Meals-On-Wheels programs, $1,000 student scholarships for each of the local three high schools, $1,000 adult scholarships at Yavapai College, turkey drives at Thanksgiving, toy drives at Christmas and fallen firefighter and police assistance statewide among others.
