56th Fort Verde Days arrives in Camp Verde

Camp Verde’s oldest tradition is preparing to celebrate its 56th year. Fort Verde Days is on for this weekend, Friday through Sunday, Oct. 12 through 14.

The trademark parade will kick off at 10 a.m. on Main Street, led by the Camp Verde Cavalry and winner of the annual Colonel’s Daughter contest, Sharli MacDonald.

The event will be preceded by a flag raising and opening comments at Fort Verde State Historic Park.

The weekend also includes living history presentations with the Buffalo Soldiers and re-enactors, special presentations, cavalry drills and a vintage baseball game at 2 p.m. The weekend offers the public a chance to get a glimpse of the past, while celebrating Fort Verde Days in conjunction with even more events throughout the town of Camp Verde.

Music and other events will be on hand.

Celebrating its 40th anniversary, the local art show will also be open to the public. The art show opens after the parade on Saturday.

There will also be old-school baseball, played by 1860s rules, along with Dutch oven demonstrations, period church services on Sunday and historical discussions and games for kids.
