Marauders wipe out Wickenburg Wranglers

The Marauders hosted the Wickenburg Wranglers on Thursday, Sept. 27, as they reached the midpoint of their 2012 season with a win and the best stats they have had all year.

The Mingus Union High School Marauders [7-5] played outstanding in the first and third sets with dominant serves but the victory in the second set was a tough fight with the Wranglers [5-6].

“I didn’t think that our offense looked that great, but the stats were the best we have had all year,” Mingus Head Coach Brian Herman said. “So I think we are on the right track.”

Middle hitter Tristen Meacham started the game with a kill set by captain Delaney Scanlan. After five Mingus points, the Wranglers finally got a point only because of an overhit ball by the Marauders.

Scanlan, Meacham and Holly Drake made a forceful defense at the net, making the score 10 to 1 until the Wranglers took advantage of Marauder miscommunication with a series of points. The girls stepped up even more on defense with libero Laura Wylie leading the team with saves to keep the ball alive in rallies. Angel Chavez, Bailey Mabery, Sarah Cochrane and Drake scored points while keeping the Wranglers at bay. The Marauders won the first set 25-6.
