Powerlifting regional boosts Verde Valley’s prestige statewide

Published:

?Powerlifting is becoming more and more popular in the Verde Valley.

On Saturday, June 23, Rec-N-Cru, a Cottonwood-based lifting club, hosted the 100% Raw Powerlifting Federation’s American Challenge Powerlifting Meet for the Southwest Region, the first-ever national powerlifting competition of its kind in the Verde Valley.

“Since it is very hard to get all the best lifters under one roof on the same day, this solved the problem,” said Tim McKeever, leader of Rec-N-Cru and co-founder of the event.

Powerlifting is a strength sport that consists of three events: the squat, the bench press and the dead lift. Powerlifters compete at meets based on weight class and combine the number of pounds they maxed at for the three different lifts for their total score. Lifters participating in the meet could compete in the powerlifting event or compete in each lift individually. Along with the squat, bench press and dead lift, the meet also had standing curl as another competition.
