Payson’s late rally eliminates Marauders

Published:

The No. 8 Marauders watched helplessly as the walls came crashing down on top of them in a devastating 8-7 loss to No. 1- seeded Payson High School in extra innings Saturday, May 5.

The loss, which will go down as one of the biggest collapses in Arizona Interscholastic Association softball state tournament history, eliminates the Mingus Union High School softball team and ends its 2012 season.

“It’s hard to pinpoint what went wrong in this game because we did so many things right. For 62 innings we played perfect softball. This is the best game I have ever coached, and I saw these girls really step up and play the game the way it’s supposed to be played,” Mingus Head Coach Heather Wacker said.
