Published:

On Thursday, Sept. 27, the Mingus Union High volleyball team traveled north to Flagstaff for a contest against the Coconino High Panthers in their third regional match-up of the season.

Mingus dominated from start to finish looking up, under and over their past troubles with the Panthers.

The Marauders took the match in three straight games [25-21, 25-21, 25-18].

“We pretty much dominated the match. Coconino is not as strong as they have been in the past,” Mingus head coach Audrey Islas said.

With the win the Marauders improve their record to 11-12 overall and 1-2 in 4A-II Grand Canyon region play.

The Marauders are now ranked ninth in the 4A-II conference according to the power points poll released on Friday, Sept. 28, by the Arizona Interscholastic Association.

“We look forward to two home games this week against Bradshaw Mountain and Page. Those games will help us even more in the poll if we can win,” Islas said.

Sinagua High

The Marauders hosted Sinagua High on Sept. 25 and lost a tough match [23-25, 25-23, 21-25, 20-25] three games to one.

“Aggressive serving and rotation errors could have made the difference between winning and losing this game,” Islas said.

As mentioned before, Mingus is ranked ninth in power points. Sinagua is ranked slightly higher in the eighth spot.

Sabrina Ortiz had an outstanding game, recording 17 digs and no serve receive errors.

“I’m so proud of her. The libero position is becoming the most important one on a volleyball team,” Islas said.

Rux stood out again, recording 20 kills, 11 block assists, four solo blocks and five digs.

Wokasch came up big when her team needed her, recording nine block assists and 48 setting assists
