Mingus Union High School’s swimming and diving team hosted a larger Prescott High School team for a dual meet on Thursday, Oct. 5.
The Marauders girls proved to have much more depth, winning 94 to 68, and the boys won some key matchups against the Badgers’ faster swimmers to win 91 to 87 for a combined win of 185 to 155.
“It was a sweet surprise beating Prescott. They are a Division II team with a lot of swimmers and great talent,” Marauders head coach Gretchen Wesbrock said. “I always tell my swimmers that we can [win] on meet days and the end result will be what it will be. We walk away proud whether we win or lose as long as we give our all on that day.”
Mingus took first place in the majority of the events across the board. According to senior Gunner Tillemans, the team has been much more focused at practice this season, and it is paying dividends.
“At this point we’re at the same point as last year at state,” Tillemans said. “Everyone’s been really focused getting in the pool. Workouts have been getting harder, which is expected. There’s a lot more camaraderie this year, and I think it’s going to be a good year.”
Tillemans won both of his individual events on the day, despite spending more time focusing on his stroke and technique, which slows him down. Once state comes around and he is more rested, he said he is confident he will get new personal records.
One month remains until the Division III state meet, which includes one dual meet and two state-qualifying meets.
According to Wesbrock, the Marauders already have a number of swimmers and relay teams in the top 24 and 16, respectively, which qualifies them for the year end competition.
