The All-Conference 2A selections are in for fall sports, with five Camp Verde High School athletes from the football and boys soccer teams selected.

Boys soccer senior forward Nate Schultz took home the fall soccer season’s top honor as the Conference 2A Player of Year in addition to his pick as Central Region Player of the Year.

Camp Verde High School’s girls basketball team won its fourth consecutive game after beating visiting Horizon Honors High School 48-19 on Thursday, Dec. 14.

The Cowboys [7-1] then traveled to Tonopah Valley High School, winning 67-18 on Friday, Dec. 15, to extend the streak to five games. However, the team’s average margin of victory of that same span is 31.5 points. 

It may not have been the toughest stretch of games, but it has also allowed the team to compete while solving a few issues.

For the second time in as many weeks, another slow start defensively put the Camp Verde High School boys basketball team in a halftime hole, but this time could not complete the comeback as it lost to Horizon Honors High School 60-50 at home on Thursday, Dec. 14.

The Cowboys [4-4] gave up 19 points in the second half after allowing 23 in the first quarter alone, but their offensive production also slowed down the stretch.

It was a classic tale of two halves that resulted in a second-half comeback for the home team.

Camp Verde High School’s boys basketball team was out of sorts in the first half of its 61-50 win over Bourgade Catholic High School on Thursday, Dec. 7. Down 35-26 at halftime, the Cowboys [3-2] gave up just 15 points over the final 16 minutes, their best half of basketball this season.

Early-season tournaments give coaches an idea of where their teams stand as well as provide opportunities for players to grow.

With two of three varsity returners who played regular minutes last year getting hurt in the second game of the Phoenix Country Day School Desert Classic, Camp Verde High School’s boys basketball team focused on doing just that.

Camp Verde High School’s girls basketball team used its lopsided 56-17 win over visiting Bourgade Catholic High School to the best of its ability, continuing to work on details at both ends of the floor.

The victory on Thursday, Dec. 7, was the first of two of the week after a 51-49 loss at Payson High School on Tuesday, Dec. 5, and a 55-8 win against Anthem Preparatory Academy on Friday, Dec. 8.
