Junior third baseman Nikki Zielinski hit a three-run walk-off home run, her second fence-clearing shot of the day, to total seven RBI and three runs scored on four hits to power the Mingus Union High School softball team to a five-inning, 14-2 win over visiting Prescott High School on Thursday, March 9.

The Marauders [3-1, 2-1 Grand Canyon] avenged their first loss of the season, 10-5, at the hands of the same Badgers team on March 7.

Mingus Union High School girls soccer coach Andrea Strobel announced that she will no longer continue at the helm of the team, per personal reasons.

Strobel was the Marauders’ coach during the last two seasons, amassing a 13-14 overall record and qualifying once for the Arizona Interscholastic Association State Championship.

Sixteen runs in the first two innings propelled the Camp Verde High School baseball team to 19-0 thrashing of visiting Wickenburg High School in four innings on Thursday, March 2.

Cowboys senior pitcher Carson Zale had a big day on the mound and in the batters box, giving up three hits, striking out five and walking two for the complete game shutout. He hit his second home run of the week, and his career, to go three for three with three RBIs and two runs scored.

The 2017 Camp Verde High School golf team may field a lineup filled with young and relatively inexperience golfers, but, according to head coach Christian Fuller, “they have fun, they want to learn.”

In their first match, the Cowboys shot 260 to finish fourth of four teams during the nine-hole round played Thursday, March 2, at Verde Santa Fe. Fuller said a number of players are still working on the basics.

The fact that the Arizona Interscholastic Association does not have girls wrestling as an official sport does not stop girls, some as young as 9 years old, from competing.

The eighth annual All Girls Club National Wrestling Tournament, hosted at Camp Verde High School on Saturday, March 4, saw more than 110 entries among the elementary, middle and high school levels.

Cottonwood Middle School’s eighth-grade boys basketball team finished its season on a high note, taking the Quad City Tournament championship with a 39-36 win over Bradshaw Mountain Middle School, hosted at CMS on Friday, March 3.

Before the tournament, the Lobos [12-1] rounded out the regular season with two lopsided wins against Glassford Hill Middle School on Feb. 27 and at Prescott Mile High Middle School on Feb. 28.

A potentially influential rule change for Verde Valley high school sports teams was approved by the Arizona Interscholastic Association’s legislative council during its meeting in Phoenix on Friday, March 3.

Winning by a wide margin, 39-5, the measure grants high school coaches to have organized practices with their respective teams year-round. Before, they only could during their particular season or during summer, from the last day of school until the first day of August. The change goes into effect July 1.
