The Verde Valley isn’t particularly known for its tech industries, but with any luck the next decade will see a boom in jobs created and housed in the area.

Prior to his election to mayor of Cottonwood last year, Timothy Elinski expressed a desire to see the Verde Valley become an “entrepreneurial hub” for tech-friendly companies, and praised community efforts to make the Verde Valley Sci-Tech Festival such a success.

To some, it’s the sticks and stems that are where the money’s at.

Arizona State Sen. Sonny Borrelli [R-District 5] introduced SB 1337, a bill that would allow the commercial growth and processing of hemp in Arizona.

A man was killed Tuesday, Jan. 24, when the stolen pickup truck he was driving northbound toward Camp Verde veered off Interstate 17 and crashed after police had flattened two of his tires, according to reports.

Bradley Burton Moore was pronounced dead at the scene just south of Camp Verde. Moore, 29, was driving a truck reported stolen from a construction site in Gilbert.

U.S. Rep. Tom O’Halleran [D-District 1] said he finds it hard to believe Republicans in the federal government will be able to find a good replacement for the Affordable Care Act — commonly known as Obamacare — any time soon.

“There’s no agreement [among Republicans] on the ACA,” O’Halleran said at a roundtable discussion on rural health care and senior prescription drug programs Jan. 18 at the Verde Valley Senior Center in Cottonwood.

Residents of a trailer park in Rimrock received a shock when they woke Jan. 6: Notices, left on their cars and doors in the middle of the night alerted them that elevated levels of lead had been found in their drinking water system.

The trailer park, located at 2111 E. Beaver Creek Road, is serviced by a private water company, the Beaver Creek Store System No. 130351. According to Arizona Department of Environmental Quality Public Information Officer Caroline Oppleman, the system provides drinking water to approximately 100 people.

Asking for Valley Academy for Career and Technology Education CEO Lois Lamer on Friday, March 18, got a simple response in the facility’s meeting room. VACTE Governing Board President Steve Dockray just said, “Lois Lamer is no longer employed here.”

A special committee created to advise the Yavapai College Governing Board about Verde Valley concerns has been traveling around the region to get the opinions of elected leaders, officials and residents.The Yavapai College Board Advisory Committee was conceived last year, and now is up and running with members in place. Cottonwood is now laying out its expectations of the college, which will affect both the community at large and its students.

So far, the committee has visited with the school superintendents of the Verde Valley, the Yavapai-Apache Nation Tribal Council, the Sedona City Council, business leaders and others.

Yavapai County is making a push to get voters to raise sales taxes by an additional quarter cent to help fund jail operations and eventual construction of a new jail in Prescott.Yavapai County Detention facility sits on State Route 260, not far from Interstate 17 in Camp Verde. Yavapai County District 3 Supervisor Chip Davis has proposed a jail tax with city leaders.The vote would be on the November ballot, and if passed, it would authorize a tax to fund jail operations.

County representatives have been traveling around the county to make their case for the increase.
