Names exert enormous influence on people’s lives, yet people generally don’t get to choose their names.

Fortunately for the Town of Camp Verde, the public does have some say on what names are attached to town facilities.

Not too long ago, walking on the shoulder of the road — even in the most trafficked areas of town — was the norm in Camp Verde.

The practice was dangerous. It slowed down automobile traffic considerably and discouraged pedestrian travel.

Among the words a person would use to sum up Camp Verde Unified School District Superintendent Dennis Goodwin, “forthright” is likely at the top of the list.

Especially when it comes to the health and wellness of students.

Without volunteers, your favorite annual events likely wouldn’t happen.

According to Camp Verde Economic Development Director Steve Ayers, Camp Verde’s three special events, the Spring Heritage Fest, Fort Verde Days and the Cornfest, are “entirely volunteer driven.”

You probably don’t think of Camp Verde as a center of major scientific inquiry.

Well, think again. Thanks to Camp Verde Community Library, one of only eight places in the nation to host Discover NASA: From Our Town to Outer Space, experts of international repute are informing the public about our searches beyond the atmosphere of Earth.

A recent interaction between the public and the Camp Verde Marshal’s Office revealed an aspect to law enforcement few consider: Namely, that police are increasingly tasked with informing people via social media, sometimes countering the public’s perceptions with hard facts, humor and enthusiasm.

On June 15, CVMO posted on its Facebook page that a scheduled DUI checkpoint had been announced and then was canceled on June 28.

The Camp Verde Cornfest has been a mainstay of Verde Valley culture since 1991, an event that occurs at the height of Hauser and Hauser Farms’ corn-growing season to highlight the community’s shared farming heritage.

Camp Verde is one step closer to seeing Homestead Park become a fixture. Or rather, one road closer.

Town of Camp Verde Economic Development Director Steve Ayers learned on Wednesday, June 21, that the town had received a $231,013 Economic Strength Projects Grant from the Arizona Department of Transportation toward construction of the Homestead Parkway extension project.
