Seven months after its anticipated completion, Cliff Castle Casino Hotel is not yet open.

In early 2016, the Yavapai-Apache Nation and co-developer DreamCatcher Hotels signed a contract with Scottsdale-based A.R. Mays Construction, naming A.R. as construction contractor for the project and setting a “substantial completion” date of March 1. Substantial completion means that construction work is completed enough to allow commercial use of the property.

A decade ago, “self-published author” was considered an insult in the ranks of authors. Not any longer.

Even the most traditional of publishing gatekeepers — that is, libraries — have come to terms with the reality that the community of selfpublished, or indie, authors is a force to be reckoned with.

On Saturday, Oct. 14, Camp Verde Community Library will put its support behind indie authors, participating in the second annual Indie Author Day celebration. The event is free and open to the public.

Scottsdale-based CFT Ventures, a father and son development team, presented the Silverado at Simonton Ranch development to the community Thursday, Sept. 21, at Camp Verde Community Library.

“Our approach to this is [as] a legacy project for my family,” Patrick Clifton said, describing the 55-plus community of 585 lots as a different addition to the area — an “active older living community” that would one day be managed by his son, Ian Clifton. “We’re not a typical merchant sale development.”

Following Camp Verde Town Manager Russ Martin’s performance evaluation, which took place in executive session of the Town Council Sept. 6, Martin discussed the noteworthy accomplishments of his seven-year tenure.

When Martin took on the role of town manager, he came up with a list of goals he wanted the town to see effected. Now, that list is nearly exhausted.

In 1961, it probably seemed unlikely that the tradition of the Colonel’s Daughter contest would last another half century and more.

Regardless, at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 24, Fort Verde State Historic Park will host the 57th annual Fort Verde Days’ Colonel’s Daughter Contest, mirroring the longstanding tradition in Midwestern and Western communities of naming a local rodeo queen, while putting a distinctly Camp Verdean spin on it.

Let it never be said that Camp Verde is lagging behind Cottonwood or Sedona when it comes to commercial development: Four national chains are developing properties in town.

Circle K’s construction of a second area store on Finnie Flat Road south of Bashas’, stalled since its announcement at the beginning of 2016, is set to begin soon, according to Camp Verde community development director Carmen Howard.

By promoting longstanding officers to supervisor positions, Camp Verde Marshal’s Office is creating a leadership team based upon experience and community mindedness.

During the Camp Verde Town Council meeting Sept. 6, Brandon Collins received a sergeant badge and Tom Baizel received a corporal badge.

Both officers’ spouses pinned their badges on their uniforms.

Traditions often start in small ways: A potluck at your best friend’s, a candle placed on a mantle to remember a departed loved one.

Or, traditions can start off with a bang. In 2015, during the inaugural Scarecrows Around Town event, nearly 100 scarecrows were erected around town in celebration of the upcoming Fort Verde Days.
