Young Camp Verde girls hang tough

Most school sports teams have years when the conditions for winning are just right — usually that means they have a group of players with experience who have played together for at least a couple years.

But sometimes, teams have years where the opposite happens — wins are more difficult to come by when the bulk of a team’s players have little to no varsity experience.

Viola Logsdon goes up for a block against the Sedona Red Rock Scorpions during their game on Thursday, Sept. 12 in Camp Verde. The Camp Verde volleyball team is having one of those years.

With only three players returning from last year’s varsity squad, the Cowboys girls are competing with a group of players who, although talented, are having to adjust to the increased level of competition at the varsity level.

Despite this, Camp Verde [1-3] got its first win of the season last week against the Mayer Wildcats, and competed well in its match with the Sedona Red Rock Scorpions [4-0] on Thursday, Sept. 12, losing 3-0 [25-11, 25-8, 25-18] to the Cowboys’  cross-valley rival coming off the Division V state championship last season.

“Game one and three were good. The girls worked hard and they played from the first point to the last point,” said Camp Verde volleyball head coach Darcy Evans. “The second game was a little frustrating.

“I think the girls gave up on themselves and they got a little frustrated, but we talked about it that they needed to work hard from the very beginning to the very end and I think it showed in the third game for us.”
