The Camp Verde Cowboys took revenge for their loss two weeks ago to the young Sedona Red Rock Scorpions, ending the 2013 season early for the Scorpions and earning a spot for themselves in the state tournament, all on Senior Night.
After losing to the Scorpions [4-13] for the first time in four years 9-5 on April 12, at Sedona, the Cowboys [7-10] won 10-5 on Wednesday, April 24, at home. A fifth-inning burst by the Scorpions, however, did cause some excitement at the end.
“The boys played well, they hit well, they fielded the ball well,” CVHS Head Coach Will Davis said. “[Taylor] Hicks did a real good job on the mound — he didn’t have many walks. Jesse Fullbright anchored the defense, had big hits and big runs.”
The Scorpions’ batters were putting the ball in play on almost every pitch in the first couple of innings, but the Cowboys quick defense tallied up the outs.
The Cowboys scored five runs in the first three innings, two off of a double by Andy Woodward, one from a single by Hicks and two more due to Scorpions errors after a base hit by Ezra Church. A double play by Logan Conrad and Heath Carroll led to two more runs in the fourth inning — from doubles hit by Hicks and Austin Stutzman — making the score 7-0.
