The city of Cottonwood Police Department is working with the city’s utilities department to work out the final details of a technology that could warn residents immediately in the event of an emergency.

Cottonwood City Manager Doug BartoshIt’s called the Cottonwood Emergency Notification System, aka CENS. The technology was created by Inspiron Logistics, an Ohio-based company founded in 2003. According to the company, it was founded based on “recognizing the importance of real-time community information in a post-9/11 world.”

The technology will enable the Cottonwood Police Department to use a computer to immediately send out an emergency notice to every telephone in a selected area.

In announcing the new technology, the police cited recent incidents in Cottonwood, such as a bank robbery, a report of someone with a gun on a school campus and vehicle accidents.

“This is something that will allow [emergency workers] to notify the whole city by phone, cell phone or text,” said Cottonwood City Manager Doug Bartosh.
