The Verde Valley wine industry reached another milestone last week with the groundbreaking for the Southwest Wine Center Teaching Winery at the Clarkdale campus of Yavapai College.Yavapai College President Penny Wills, Ph.D., Clarkdale Mayor Doug Von Gausig, Cottonwood Mayor Diane Joens, Yavapai College Verde Valley Campus Dean James Perey, Verde Valley Wine Consortium President Tom Schumacher, Arizona Wine Growers Association President Peggy Fiandaca and construction company Vice President Joe Kelleher, left to right, break ground for the Teaching Winery.

A large crowd gathered Nov. 19 by the handball courts, housed in a building that will eventually become the center of the college’s wine program.

As the region continues to expand on growing grapes and supporting wine tourism, the college is working to stay on top of the trend to educate people locally to work in the industry.
