When the Sedona International Film Festival kicks off this month, one of the films presented will give a former resident the opportunity to return to where she spent her formative years.Sam [Michael O’Keefe], right, a formerly-acclaimed graphic novelist tries to overcome a midlife crisis by making a connection with his neighbor, Jeff [Blake Bashoff], in “Finding Neighbors.” The film, produced by Verde Valley School graduate Jennifer Young, will screen at the 2014 Sedona International Film Festival on Sunday, Feb. 23.

The Clemenceau Heritage Museum is gearing up for one of their biggest fundraisers of the year.

The Arts and Crafts show is set for Saturday, Feb. 8, and will feature several local artists displaying works of all kinds.Bob Lanning of the Clemenceau Heritage Museum goes over a full list of vendors and artists that will be a part of the  museum’s upcoming craft show. While the Zeke Taylor Barbecue is the  museum’s major fundraiser, the craft show is just as popular, having sold out of vendor spaces.

A law passed last year that took effect on Jan. 1 will change when elections are held in the Verde Valley and around the state.New laws come into effect with the new year. Some of the new laws concern voting in municipal elections in even-numbered years, pushing dates from March and May later in the year to August and November.

From dogs being banished from the farmer’s market to the approval of civil unions around the Verde Valley, 2013 brought in some changes.A 42-year-old pilot from Oklahoma crashes his plane into a fence after he mistakes the road next to the Cottonwood Airport for the actual runway in mid-May. The pilot only suffered minor injuries in the crash.

After closing out 2013, Main Stage in Cottonwood is looking to increase programming as the venue approaches its first anniversary in May.Rebecca Riffel, co-owner of Main Stage in Cottonwood, stands at the bar on Thursday, Dec. 26, as the night’s musical acts set up. Main Stage is in its eighth month of operation. Riffel is excited to see it continue to grow.

Cottonwood approves civil unions Print E-mail

The city of Cottonwood last week became the sixth municipality in the state of Arizona to recognize civil unions.Cottonwood City Councilman Terence Pratt reads a quote by Thomas Jefferson about the separation of church and state before the public comment period regarding the city’s proposed civil union ordinance on Dec. 17. Council passed the ordinance 6-1, making the city the sixth in the state and fourth in the Verde Valley to approve civil unions.
