Clarkdale becomes 5th town to OK civil unions Print E-mail

Clarkdale became the fifth municipality in Arizona to recognize civil unions last week after a unanimous vote from the Town Council at its Nov. 12 meeting.Clarkdale decided Nov. 12 to approve civil unions, following the example of Jerome, Cottonwood and Sedona. The move allows same-sex couples — and heterosexual couples — to enter into a civil union, gaining the benefits of power of attorney, living will and hospital visitation rights.

Local school districts are continuing to enjoy the support of the voters after budget overrides were approved on the ballot earlier this month.Students at Mingus Union High School head out to the busses on Friday, Nov. 15, as the last bell of the week rings, announcing the weekend’s arrival. Now, with the overrides approved and passed, Mingus, along with Cottonwood-Oak Creek School District can move forward without having to make budget cuts.

The Cottonwood City Council renewed its commitment to fair housing last week, a requirement if it wants to continue legally using a federal grant for work already underway on 10th Street.Cottonwood’s 10th Street Improvement Project, constructing new curbs and gutters along with sidewalks and a bike lane from Main Street to Mingus Avenue, broke ground Sept. 3.

The town of Clarkdale is drawing attention to recent growth in the commercial sector downtown and in other areas.New business owners Mike Gilmour and wife Lee Shutt are currently remodeling the inside of a storefront on 10th Street in Clarkdale. It will become half an Italian light café and half a knick-knack store. They hope to be open within a month or sooner.

Efforts are moving forward with plans to construct a statue honoring law enforcement in front of the Cottonwood Police Department.Artist Neil Logan outlines the stages of his sculpting process in a poster of “The Calling,” on Saturday, Nov. 2, at Moose Lodge No. 1449. “The Calling” will eventually become a four-and-a-half-foot tall bronze-cast statue, to be placed at the Cottonwood Police Department.

Made in Clarkdale started back in 1986 as an art show with 17 participating artists, created by Ellie Bauer initially as an effort to fund the Clarkdale Chamber of Commerce’s newsletter.the men’s lounge in Clarkdale will host the 27th annual Made in Clarkdale art show for 10 days in December and will feature many different types and styles of art.

The Cottonwood Airport is looking ahead by planning for future capital improvement projects over the next five years.personal airplanes park at the Cottonwood Municipal Airport, which houses many small aircraft belonging to local pilots. The airport is currently drawing up plans for future improvements so it will last for future generations of aviation enthusiasts.

A proposed fire station for the Amante neighborhood in Verde Santa Fe won’t be built after neighborhood rules failed to support the proposal.Reserve Firefighter Patrick Wiatrolik, left, and Firefighter Paramedic Ivan Anderson work at the Verde Valley Fire District’s Station 31 in Cottonwood. The district is still looking for a location for a new fire station after one proposed for the Amante neighborhood near Verde Santa Fe in Cornville, a location roughly centered between Stations 31 and 32, which would have helped give the district better coverage, did not receive enough votes of support from Amante residents.
