Camp Verde commemorates 9/11 Print E-mail

The flags were placed along Main Street, a red, white and blue reminder that towns across the nation remember the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.Camp Verde Fire District firefighter J. Gable rings the bell at Camp Verde’s Ramada, Striking the Four Fives at the beginning of the 9/11 memorial put on by the American Legion, then again for each war our nation has participated in.

It happened 13 years ago but for many it seems like just yesterday.

Anita Villalobos was at the book sale last Thursday, held in the Rio Verde Plaza shopping center, where proceeds go to benefit the Camp Verde Library.Originally from New Mexico, Anita Villalobos has been in the Verde Valley for about four years. Before that, she spent 40 years in Phoenix, where she worked in the newspaper business. At first she worked in the newsroom, but eventually moved to the finance office for the paper.

Villalobos was there to help benefit her kitchen.

Town gets new logo for 150th Print E-mail

It’s not everyday one gets to celebrate a 150th birthday.Camp Verde will turn 150 years old next year. While the logo shown has been used in the past, the town is calling for submissions from local artists and graphic designers for a new emblem to be used with promotional materials for the sesquicentennial, with the winner receiving a $250 prize.

Camp Verde’s 150th, or sesquicentennial, is technically in 2015, marking the anniversary of when the first Anglo settlers came from over the mountain.

A recent study paints a difficult future for fish in the Verde River if current conditions continue unchanged.Antonio Hernandez fishes from the dock of one of Dead Horse Ranch State Park’s lagoons with daughter Ali and son Tony. The park’s lagoons are fed by the Verde River, and a new study done by the University of Washington indicates the river’s fish could be in trouble.

Rich Bentley’s father got him interested in working with his hands at a young age.Rich Bentley’s father got him interested in working with his hands at a young age, and he worked at a large auto shop in Phoenix. Bentley enjoyed the work, but an injury he suffered forced him to stop. Coming back to the Verde Valley, Bentley created a mobile cooking station devoted to making tacos.​

“He used to build gyrocopters,” Bentley said. “He was also a kickboxer.”
