According to Camp Verde Mayor Charlie German, the Town of Camp Verde first became incorporated for three reasons: To improve protection to the public, to improve road pavement and to add more ball fields for youth.The Camp Verde Sports Complex is intended to achieve that third goal.
In addition to the $7 million in funding already approved by the council, German hopes to establish a 501(c)(3) nonprofit for the park.
“If we have a 501(c)(3), it will allow us more flexibility for grants the town is not eligible for,” he said.
The park design includes up to six baseball fields, two football-soccer fields and pickleball courts.More than 30 bidders have previewed the property and have expressed interest. Bids will be due Wednesday, March 14.Right now German said the town is looking for people to lead the organization.
He is hoping the group will be similar to the Camp Verde Community Library nonprofit, Friends of Camp Verde Library.German said responsibilities of the group would include a meeting at least once a year and filing an annual report with the state.
“I will assist in guiding you,” he said during a meeting with the public on Friday, Feb. 23.
At the meeting, German expressed his excitement in seeing the park come into fruition.
“I wanted this back when my kids were in school,” he said. “My son is now 44 … Now is the time to join us. Let’s get this thing built.”
