A woman was killed in a serious two-car crash that closed southbound traffic on State Route 89A toward Cottonwood north of Page Springs Road and south of Sedona’s Wastewater Reclamation Plant.
The crash occurred at 9:09 a.m., Wednesday, March 23, when a northbound 2004 Hyundai SUV left the roadway for unknown reasons, crossed the median and collided with a southbound 2015 Hyundai compact car, according to Bart Graves, media specialist with Arizona Department of Public Safety’s Public Affairs Unit.
The driver of the car, 53-year-old Mary Catherine Meyer, of Shoreview, Minn., was pronounced deceased at the scene, Graves said.
Her 24-year-old female passenger, also from Shoreview, Minn., and the 40-year-old driver of the SUV, Andre Alicen Caron, from Cornville, were both airlifted to Flagstaff Medical Center, both in critical condition with non-life-threatening injuries.
Yavapai County Sheriff’s deputies were turning cars around at the scene of the crash, diverting Cottonwood-bound drivers to State Route 179. Sedona Fire District had two engines and two ambulances at the scene.
Graves said the accident is under possible criminal investigation.
