Men and women have put on a uniform to serve this country through military service since the nation was founded.
To honor their service and sacrifice, a park dedicated to veterans will be built in Cottonwood.
The park will sit within an already existing park, near the corner of Sixth Street and Mingus Avenue.
People we be gathering at Garrison Park in Cottonwood at 2 p.m. to break ground on what will become the Verde Valley Military Service Park.
Keith Vogler, with the Verde Valley Detachment of the Marine Corps League has helped organize the effort to make the park a reality.
Vogler has been traveling around to local governments and organizations to gather support for the project, which has been readily given.
“There’s one prominent feature,” Vogler said. “A 65-foot American flag.”
It’s something that Vogler said will be tall enough to see from all around the area.
Eventually, Vogler said, there will be an educational component to the park that will remind people of the conflicts that American armed forces have engaged in over the years.
There will also be an area where each branch of the armed forces is recognized.
Vogler said that the park will also include a statue dedicated to the canines that have assisted in military operations.
