In a 4-3 vote, the Cotton-wood City Council last week approved paying a maximum of just over $10.1 million to complete the construction of a wastewater reclamation plant near Riverfront Park.
The Riverfront Water Reclamation Facility has been in the works for several years.
The plant, to be located near an existing lift station, will improve the city’s ability to handle wastewater.
It was originally supposed to cost $8.5 million.
Construction of the plant will save money in the long run, since the city pays around $100,000 a month to pump the water uphill to the current facility.
The lower elevation of the plant won’t require as much electricity to boost water through the pipes to the higher elevation closer to the foot of Mingus Mountain.
Flooding is a concern at the lower elevation, so the city plans to lift and build a wall around the new plant to keep it out of the 500-year flood zone.
